Communication, professionalism, integrity, respect. These are just a few of the qualities that organizations expect from job applicants, and rightly so.   Unfortunately, however, too many organizations don’t reciprocate. I’m currently coaching a graduating senior who is in the midst of a job search. She had a 2nd interview with a particular company, and was told that she would be informed of their hiring decision by a certain date. When that date came and went and she hadn’t heard form them, she automatically assumed the worst. This is an all too familiar scenario that…

I have been working with LinkedIn since early 2012, exploring the importance of continuous career management. Along this journey we have found that spending just 9 minutes a day on your career management could help you get promoted, find that ideal job or help you become better at what you’re already doing. I’ve analyzed what realistically can be fitted into a daily schedule without adding stress or pressure. It is commonly known by educators and psychologists that the ability to focus one’s attention on a task is crucial for the achievement of one’s goals and so I believe…

A few months ago, our CEO Jeff Weiner wrote an op-ed in Fortune Magazine describing the “other” unemployment crisis;  that despite historically high unemployment rates we still have more than three million unfilled job opportunities in our country, and what we could do to solve it. Last week, he had a chance to revisit this theme in his speech to roughly 1,000 local CEOs and business leaders at the Bay Area Council’s 2012 Outlook Conference, where the theme was “The Next Human Leap”. Jeff’s speech touched upon the ever widening gap between the highest number of job…

It’s been a rough couple of weeks for blogging, or business blogging at least. This decline mirrors a trend in…

  • LinkedIn Acquisition: Slideshare (!!!)

    Jason Alba
    4 May 2012 | 8:36 pm
I have stayed away from writing about acquisitions that LinkedIn does because of a few reasons. Either they didn’t make too much sense, or because the acquisition didn’t seem to add much/any value to the average user, or because I wanted to focus mostly on using LinkedIn, not so much what’s happening with the company. Speaking of happening with the company, tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo, aka, LinkedIn’s birthday! Back to acquisitions. LinkedIn acquired Slideshare for $119M, apparently (details here).  I find this really interesting. I think Slideshare was doing fine on…

I was at the library yesterday with some time to spare and was flipping through the Forbes magazine and saw that Reid Hoffman was worth about 2.1B. (right now on Forbes it says 1.8B… Give or take a few hundred million, I guess) That is over two thousand million dollars. That’s amazing. He’s 44 years old. Let’s say he lives to be 100. He could spend 35 million a year and still have money left over (assuming he isn’t investing it… otherwise he could spend a lot more and not even touch his principle). I know people have a problem with rich people, but I…

I’ve been contacting people in my LinkedIn Group. Even though I’m the owner of the Group, and I’ve seen the group member’s name at one point, LinkedIn won’t show me the full name if they are not in my first or second degree network. There are tricks to get around this. Here are two I’ve used today: Copy and paste the Professional Headline (most people let LinkedIn decide what this is, the title and company) and do a Google search. Every time I’ve done that I’ve found the person, and their email and phone number Go to the website of their company…

10 of the 12 ConnectOC Organizing Committee Members, including Windmill Networking contributors Debbie Miller (4th on the left) and Neal Schaffer (center).Social Media events are a great way for hotels and restaurants to gain exposure. Though offering up freebies to a large audience could initially feel like a loss rather than a gain, the potential ROI of doing so in this context is uniquely unprecedented. It may seem counter-productive to invite locals into your hotel, as hotel business relies on over-night visitors and, obviously, people who live in the city where the hotel resides aren’t…

There’s been much buzz recently about the use of images in social media marketing.   More and more platforms are visual (think Pinterest, Instagram, SlideShare and Tumblr).   Facebook’s Timeline is all about pretty pictures.  And it seems that every other tweet references an infographic. We love images because they offer a nice diversion in a busy social media environment, and, let’s face it; viewing can be more fun than reading.   Savvy marketers are jumping on board and exploring ways to incorporate imagery into the marketing mix.It is about winning and keeping attention.  The…

Regardless if you are a fan or not of Facebook, however, there is still no better way to reach out and engage with both present and potential consumers in social media than through a robust Facebook Page. The problem is: Are you truly maximizing your Facebook presence to reach your marketing objectives? Many businesses that I meet are not.Maximizing your business presence on Facebook begins with truly maximizing all of…

When it comes to social media presences for companies, Facebook is still the king. Even though upstart Pinterest is clearly giving Facebook a run for its money, the Facebook page is still the anchor for most companies’ social media strategy. Compared to other social media channels, Facebook is where the eyeballs are and that puts it at the center of the social media universe. For example, Coca-Cola’s Facebook page has 41,679,113 “Likes”, but their Twitter handle has 533,194 followers. Odds are good that your experience mirrors this. The great thing about this is that it makes it easy…

We found it easy to visualize the emails themselves. What required more thought on our part were the “engagement triggers” – incentives designed to turn one-way emails into trust-building conversations between the recipients and the staff. Many of you are having the same discussion. Did you know that introductions are proven to be more effective than cold calls?  When you’re making cold calls, you’re calling someone you don’t know, hoping to get their attention long enough to listen to what you have to say.  When someone introduces you, it comes with a personal recommendation.  The person will listen to you because you’ve been personally introduced. LinkedIn makes it easy to request introductions. Let’s say you want to meet John Smith, who is a potential client. You’ve worked with executives like him, and the results have been excellent. You…
