We hear from students and recent graduates on a daily basis who are struggling in their decision about where to go to school and what to study. Over the course of the last three years, LinkedIn has been working hard to bring students new tools to help them through this decision making process. But an even bigger pain point seems to be figuring out just how they are going to pay for it all. To help with this problem, we are proud to introduce LinkedIn’s very first scholarship. We are giving away $100,000 in scholarships, with five grand prizes of $10,000. One grand prize will be given away…

Editor’s Note: This is part of an ongoing Q&A series called the Inside Story where we sit down to learn more from the people behind the products at LinkedIn. Q: Why is LinkedIn focusing on content? A: We have millions of members around the world who want to be amazing at their jobs – and that basically boils down to being in permanent learning mode. At LinkedIn, we think that access to rich, informative content helps drive ongoing professional development and discussion. But it has to be surfaced in a way that’s useful to you personally – tailored to your individual needs and…

Getty / Scott Olson We’re told Jeff Weiner would have sold LinkedIn to Microsoft for $2 billion way back when. Here’s some fun scuttlebutt we heard this week. In the years before LinkedIn’s 2011 IPO, Microsoft entered into talks to buy LinkedIn several times. At one point the deal was close to happening for around $500 million. Microsoft’s last offer, in the months before LinkedIn’s IPO, was ...

    22 Oct 2014 | 9:00 am
By their very design and origins, cities have always been linked closely to opportunity. In addition to providing concentrated access to a more diverse set of cultural, culinary, and educational options, cities also attract and nurture clusters of workers with complementary and contrasting skills. For workers considering a move, the professional attributes of a city can matter just as much as the attributes of a particular company or opportunity. Some professionals considering their next career move may be interested in an area that has a rich ecosystem of talent in their specialty. Others…

When Senator Gillibrand visited LinkedIn last week for her Speaker Series talk, she not only impressed us with her legislative accomplishments; she demonstrated the importance of telling stories — our stories, and the stories of those we serve or who need our help. This is how she is able to make a difference — by sharing her story and the story of others to inspire change.  She encouraged all of us to make our voices heard to change the world. Her stories of working on issues close to her heart and the hearts of the people she serves is a true beacon and reason for optimism in the…

  • LinkedIn Announcements Change: Yippee! Hurrah!

    Jason Alba
    17 Oct 2014 | 1:44 pm
In August I blogged about a dismal change LinkedIn had made: LinkedIn Announcement Change: Boo! Hiss! Today I’m here to report that the either changed back, or fixed a bug…. whatever the reason, LinkedIn Group Announcments have become useful again. The problem was that when you sent a “Group Announcement,” which is an email that members of your group get, the inbox subject would be: [New announcement] ___________________________ (the name of the group). You can seem an image on the August post. Since then I was almost resolved to give up on Group Announcements……
  • LinkedIn Articles: When You Can’t Reply To Comments

    Jason Alba
    2 Oct 2014 | 6:53 am
I wrote an article on LinkedIn that has upset some people because I said job seekers are stupid. Actually, I didn’t say that. I said they can say something that makes them SOUND stupid.  And some people thought I was talking about an interview, which I wasn’t.  They got hung up on a few things, got mad, and left a comment. Anyway, I went into the comments on the article, wrote a reply, and usually the reply got posted.  But sometimes the reply button did nothing… I click and click and click and nothing. I had to switch from Chrome (my default browser) to Internet…
  • Best LinkedIn Job Title When Unemployed

    Jason Alba
    25 Sep 2014 | 10:51 pm
Check out this post on Job-Hunt from Laura Smith-Proulx: The Best LinkedIn Job Title When You Are Unemployed The whole article is great – I want to focus on #1 and #2. Most of the time I see the job title (and professional headline, or as she calls it in #3, the headline) as a brag statement.  It is a part of history.  It is something that happened in the past. The problem with that is that a LinkedIn Profile (as well as a resume) is a marketing document.  Because of that, you shouldn’t necessarily focus on the past.  You should focus on what you want.  The future.  Why the…
  • Goodbye Introduction Requests? And EXCELLENT Advice from Donna Serdula

    Jason Alba
    25 Sep 2014 | 7:47 am
I saw this on a LinkedIn group I’m on: LinkedIn Removes Introduction Requests to 3rd Degree Connections Maybe people just weren’t using the Introduction requests. I had for a while, but LinkedIn had limited them, which was dumb.  I have a feeling people just weren’t using them much.  And those who did use them didn’t have much success. I think the main reason they are gone, though, is that it forces people to upgrade.  Many of the changes LinkedIn has made in the last few years (since a little before the IPO) that have left people scratching there heads were to get…

    17 Sep 2014 | 10:23 pm
So LinkedIn is not discontinuing this feature, but it’s weakening it. Note: if you don’t use gmail, don’t worry about this I guess it was inevitable that LinkedIn would put up high walls around Rapportive’s functionality, and cut off other systems.  Kind of a play from the 1990′s, imo. Oh well, I had it, but didn’t use it that much.  The author of the article was, I think, too enthusiastic with this line:  “If you’re unfamiliar with Rapportive, you don’t email enough.” asdf

    30 Sep 2014 | 5:00 am
At Integrated Alliances, we had a weekly discussion about professionals. Yes… PROFESSIONALS using LinkedIn contact emails by subscribing them to their newsletters. The day after Lori mentioned what was going on with her colleagues. I experienced the same incident with another sender. I am not going to name names. But I was pretty ticked off. And my mellow was shot for 30 minutes. I asked myself a few questions. How did I get this email? It moved to… Did I sign up for this? Am I connected with this person on LinkedIn? After about investigating for 5 minutes, I found the person WAS a…

Concerts rock! Why do we love concerts? Well there is a few reasons why. We love jamming out to our favorite songs. We love the experience. At Integrated Alliances, we love how concerts relate to our company’s goals. Rockstars know exactly whom their fans are. They point at them during the concert. They serenade. The lead singer might get down on his knees and scream out an awesome verse. What does this all mean? Rockstars know how to praise their fans for coming. Not only that. They know how to get their fans to the show. As the Audience Manager, my position and my passion are to get those…

It is about relationship building and this article deals with the start of many of those relationships. Sorry to say this, but your profile might be killing business prospects and you may not even know it. Visitors come to your profile and they might be “already gone”.
