In the next three years as an independent company, we had an incredible ride, growing the Pulse user base to 30 million users and the team to 25 people. In 2013, as we started thinking about the future of Pulse, we realized that to truly become the authoritative source of daily news, we’d have to get significantly better with our content recommendations. We…

  • How to Use a Red Herring to Get What You Want

    Daniel Abram
    3 Jul 2015 | 3:24 pm
Conceal your intentions in order to receive what you want. You want something. However, there is a superior of some sort withholding that item of desire from you. This superior may be a boss withholding a raise or vacation days, a landlord withholding pets in an apartment, or a parent withholding curfew or another privilege. A tactic to resolve this type of conflicts is to use a “red herring” while making your case to a superior. Here is an anecdote of how I used a “red herring” with my landlord in order to be allowed a cat in my apartment. A month into my rent, I…

I spend a good deal of time working with, observing, and being inspired by CEOs. They’re wired differently; their capacity for risk is greater than most, their pursuit of excellence strong and more fine-tuned. Their ability to recall the smallest detail and influence their tribes with strategic vision is just a part of the day’s work. Over the last four years I worked closely with CEOs to introduce or further coach them on how to navigate a social-business landscape particularly through LinkedIn. It’s been interesting.
