If you suspect that your 20-something employee is sneering at you from behind the stack of copies you asked him to collate, research suggests you might be right. Three-quarters of professionals under age 30 think their skills exceed those of an entry-level job, a survey released today by LinkedIn shows. But workers over 30 were wary of this attitude, saying they doubted the younger generation’s work ethic. Perhaps more shockingly, 64 percent of all adults — young adults included — are nervous about millennials leading the workforce. The season for commencement speeches —…

Check out this post: LinkedIn Stock Dips 10% On Slowing Growth, Even As It Beats Q1 Estimates On Sales of $324.7M; EPS $0.45 I don’t like the stock market. I don’t think it provides real feedback on how a company really does, so the 10% dip doesn’t concern me at all. Having said that, here is what I got from that post: LinkedIn soared past the 200M mark and now has over 225M members.  This DOES NOT mean users, it means signups.  I’m guessing a lot (most?) of the new signups are outside of the U.S. LinkedIn will “earn” more than $1B this year. That is…

  • 3 Easy Ways to Strengthen Your LinkedIn Network

    Lindsey Pollak
    22 May 2013 | 9:00 am
I spend a lot of time teaching job seekers how to make new connections on LinkedIn. Constantly meeting new people and growing your professional network is crucial to uncovering job leads and building a successful and lasting career. But today we’re going to talk about another important piece of networking that is often neglected: maintaining your connections once you have them. As the old song says, “Make new friends, but keep the old….” You can’t build up a new network every time you look for a job or have a career need; think of your longer-term connections as a deep bench of…

It gives me immense pleasure to announce another momentous occasion in LinkedIn India’s journey. Earlier this month, we crossed 20 million members in India. It is humbling to play a part in the professional lives of millions of Indians, helping them be more productive and successful in their careers. Our members have been our motivation since we started operations in India a little over three years ago. Since then, our member base has grown by almost 500% from 3.4 million to 20 million today. To me, however, it is not just about growing our member count but about enabling our members to…

After reading the comments that Media Group 1 members left on my “Reflection on Privacy, Online Identity, and Social Media” post, we all concluded that social media is a great form of communication when used properly. Our privacy is important and we must always take proper precautions when creating profiles, tweeting our thoughts, or making connections. Social media can often make us feel comfortable in our own skin when hiding behind a computer screen, but we must be aware that our information can be seen by the whole world. Everyone agreed that a social media site is not the place to…

I have spent today attempting to create a LinkedIn profile without screaming blue murder at my poor inoffensive laptop screen or curling up in a little ball of despair on the floor, sucking my thumb and whimpering incoherently about a lack of business connections. At one point I caught myself asking my decidedly non-sentient LinkedIn profile if it were an employability test in itself. Then I tweeted about how difficult setting up a LinkedIn profile is in a desperate attempt to prove that I can use social media. As you can see, life after university is going just swimmingly. Anyway, once I had…

I got this email from someone on a webinar I recently did: I often get emails saying that someone I know has endorsed me for a particular skill (the boxes, not a written recommendation).  I’ve wondered if there is etiquette for this situation.  I assume that if you want to use it as a way to connect with that person you have a perfect opening.  If not, should you say thanks?  Honestly, in many cases it isn’t really a meaningful endorsement. I just delete them. I don’t think anyone expects a thank you.  It is so easy to give endorsements… and I think you are right:…

One of the questions I hear asked most often is the burning issue of how many social media channels a recruiter should use. • Using B2B Social Media to Create a Brand-Building Customer Experience

    Joellyn Sargent
    20 May 2013 | 2:05 am
As I was doing research for an upcoming presentation on digital branding, I came across some interesting stats that I believe have big implications for B2B marketers. First, JD Power’s “Social Media Benchmark Study” provided showed that 2/3 of consumers used social channels for customer support, versus 33% who used social media to access marketing information. This is a consumer study, but B2B buyers are people, too, and it’s not a big leap to expect their habits as consumers influence their behavior in B2B interactions. Second, American Express reported in 2012 that its research…

  • New Email Study Reveals Solid Insights

Experian recently released a study that all marketers and businesses should take note of. It’s the Q4 2012 Quarterly Email Benchmark Study from Experian. Here’s what jumped out at me. The ‘best’ time and day to mail varies by industry, however, across all brands and industries: Emails deployed on Saturdays and Sundays had the highest open, unique clicks, transaction rates and revenue per email, yet had the lowest volume deployed compared to other days of the week. For weekdays, Monday had the highest revenue per mail, but Friday had the higher click rate. Deploying emails…

But it takes developing relationships to move a cold prospect to this stage…. …And relationships take time to build, are one-to-one, and can’t be scaled….or can they? I say they can. Relationships CAN be built in a scalable manner, in mass, with people that you barely even know. (But trust me, they know who you are.) So how’s this done? The way we do it is by building online communities that attract your prospects, usually in the form of…

“Many brokers and agents I talk to struggle with understanding how investing in LinkedIn can yield results for them. What would you say to them? How has your LinkedIn presence impacted your business?” I recently posed this question in a few real estate focused LinkedIn groups. Not surprisingly, the majority of responses were not positive. Most real estate professionals aren’t getting real business leads and sales from LinkedIn. There’s a clear reason for it, which I’ll get into in just a bit. But first let’s take a look at a few of these responses:…
